CALIFORNIA MAJORITY RULE
Let’s get rid of the 2/3 Supermajority
Each and every year in Sacramento, the state budget is held hostage by an entrenched MINORITY of legislators. It’s time for California to join the 21st Century and legislate by MAJORITY rule.

2009 REDO
Let’s look back at the “CURRENT EVENTS” stories from 2009 and see if we were paying attention. You’ve seen all of these stories in the RFK News. All of them are true, EXCEPT FOR ONE. One story has been changed to make it false. Can you find the false story? Answer at the end.
1. July 3, 2009 - Sarah Palin announced her resignation as Governor of Alaska, saying that finishing her term as a lame duck would not be fair to the voters and she didn’t want to be a dead fish.
2. July 15, 2009 - The space shuttle Endeavor went into orbit. The seven astronauts aboard Endeavor, together with the six astronauts already aboard the Space Station, set a record for the most people in space at one time, thirteen astronauts in orbit. The entire mission went perfectly.
3. 7-27-09 - The Congress of the United States passed a resolution stating that Barack Obama was born in the state of Hawaii. He is, therefore, a US citizen. Huffingtonpost
4. In 1978, following a Supreme Court decision, California reinstated the death penalty. Since then, 83 death row inmates have died while on Death Row. 13 of those 83 were executed. The other 70 died of natural causes.
5. Ted Kennedy had a significant connection with such laws as: the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting rights Act of 1965, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Medicare, and MedicAid. For some senators, this list would be a full career. These laws were passed during his first full term in the US Senate.
6. September 8 - Lubna Hussein, a female journalist in Sudan, and twelve other women were arrested for wearing pants, which is against Islamic Law. When she appeared before the court for sentencing, she was wearing the same pants she had worn earlier. Outside the court, over 100 women demonstrated against the proceeding. They were all wearing pants. LA Times
7. October 5 - New Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor began the Court’s new term by peppering the attorneys with 36 questions during the first hour. Justice Clarence Thomas, who has been on the court since 1991, hasn’t asked one question in over three years. LA Times
8. October 6 - The Conservative Bible Project has determined that portions of the Bible are too liberal, an d so has decided to eliminate or rewrite certain passages which are considered to be non conservative. NY Daily News
9. October 28 - While speaking at a motivational seminar where he was paid an undisclosed fee, George W Bush talked about returning to private life as demonstrated by walking his dog Barney around his Dallas neighborhood, and carrying a Pooper-Scooper. LA Times
10. Right wing talk show lunatic Glenn Beck, on Faux News, has decided that the art deco symbols in the concrete facade of Rockefeller Center in New York, are actually part of a communist conspiracy in the US. The art work, one depicting a man with a hammer, and another showing a farmer with a scythe, are actually the hammer and sickle of the Soviet Union.
A Holiday Message from the Marshalls
In keeping with the concept of our advancing years, we moved forward withg some changes in 2009 that are givingus whole new experiences with the world around us. The geography, climate, and environment changed completely when we gave up our home of 41 years in Southern California and, with lots of help from friends and family, moved across the country to our new home in Northern Virginia. Those changes were easy to expect and accept, as we both grew up in Michigan’s similar latitude. The social changes of leaving so many family members and longtime friends behind was the hard part, though we did move close to family members here, and we are already making new friends.
At Thanksgiving, we had a grand visit with most of our Western family when we flew to Carol and Phil’s home in Reno. The others caravanned in from south and north for the feast. Fourteen of us surrounded the extended table, and the three under-five grandgirls had their own table in Elena’s bedroom. The event was capped by a Thanksgiving-night snowstorm that slowed homeward bound travelers a couple of days later.
As you see by our card (the picture of the house), we have had snow here also, and though a cold rain has washed it away already, we must watch for ice. The mornings are brisk for Dorothy’s daily walk. Paton has joined the SAR, and we meet monthly with a friendly group of descendants of Revolutionary War patriots.
We love being close to Heather and Chris and their family. They give us lots of support and Dorothy shares shopping expeditions with her.
Now, Happy New Year to All

A Celebration of Life - Sunday, January 17, 2010
Come join Eli's family in celebration of 89 years of a long and happy life that included, but wasn't limited to, being a political activist, brother, father, uncle, grandfather and world traveler. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. If given the opportunity, he would have gladly taken another 89 years. He was the consummate "people person" who loved parties and conversations of all kinds. Come and share food, his family, friends and most of all good memories of Eli.

CURRENT EVENTS ANSWER
Although the shuttle mission to the Space Station was a big success, it did have one notable failure. One of the space station toilets broke down. With 13 astronauts on board, you could definitely say, “Houston, we have a problem!”
