Letter to Our Senators - Feb., 2008 Letter to Our Senators The Honorable Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer: Once again, President Bush has taken outrageous license in employing a Signing Statement to exempt his administration from following a law - legislation passed by the Congress and signed by him. The report printed in the Los Angeles Times on February 1 states that he objects to four provisions of the 2008 Defense Authorization Act which would: • Prohibit establishing permanent bases in Iraq or controlling Iraqi oil resources • Establish a Congressional commission to review military contracts in Iraq • Protect contractor whistle blowers; • Put a 45-day limit on U.S. intelligence agencies to respond to information requests from Congress’ committees on intelligence and armed services While it seems almost impossible that you were able to get such a measure passed and signed, I admire the accomplishment, and I am outraged again at the President’s brazen attempt to put this Congressional action and the Constitutional structure that underlies it at his personal; disregard. I understand that Senator Levin has stated that Congress has the right to expect that the Administration will faithfully execute all provisions of the law, and that Senator Webb has alerted all of his - your - colleagues that Bush’s action is potentially an in infringement on the rights of the Congress. Please do not allow this snubbing of our legislative process to pass without a confrontation this time. He has issued hundreds of such arrogant flippancies, but this one should not allowed to stand unchallenged. He does have plans to commit the United States to long term guarantees of involvement in Iraq as though by fiat. The Vice President has worked to expand presidential powers almost expotentially, but the Constitution gives precedence to Congress. If courts have not ruled on Presidential exception to signed laws, now is the time to file the challenge! Bush has deliberately flaunted our basic law, and with his having nearly a year yet in office, his outlawry must be stopped! J.
