June 13, 2009 - 12 to 3 pm La Mirada Sizzler Restaurant 15252 Rosecrans, La Mirada (corner of Adelpha) Tickets are $30 each - for reservations call: Betty Wolfe 714/522-1754 or Jeanette Jenkins 562/947-8036 2009 Region 16 Democrat of the Year 2009 Region 16 Democrat of the Year One of the best duties of being a Regional Director is the naming of the annual Region 16 Democrat of the Year. This can be a very difficult process because each year there are literally scores of dedicated Democrats who have selflessly contributed their time, their talent, and their devotion to our cause and to our country. Region 16 includes the 60th, 61st, 62nd, 63rd, and 72nd Assembly Districts, and stretches from Angel Stadium in Anaheim all the way to the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains. The 2009 Region 16 Democrat of the Year is Nancy Ruth White, from the City of Redlands in the 63rd Assembly District. Most recently, Nancy served as President of the San Bernardino Luncheon Club with a membership of nearly 200 Democrats. The Luncheon Club is unique among Democratic Clubs because it holds general membership meetings each week providing speakers on topics ranging from local politics to national issues. In 2007, Nancy ran for election to the City Council for the City of Redlands. She came in third out of seven candidates and missed being elected by only 148 votes. Nancy is a long time member of the San Bernardino County Democratic Central Committee and was twice elected as Chair of that body. She has attended five Democratic National Conventions as a delegate including the 2008 convention in Denver where she represented Sen. Hillary Clinton. She also attended the inauguration of President Barack Obama in January, 2009. Nancy is active in many community groups in Redlands and San Bernardino County, including: Planned Parenthood for San Bernardino and Orange Counties, the Community Action Partnership, and the Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice. Nancy has received recognition for her work on issues of the environment and population and for her concern for establishing a sustainable world for its citizens. She received the League of Women Voters’ Citizen of Achievement. Nancy has been a resident of Redlands for almost forty years and retired from the Redlands School District after thirty eight years of teaching, and from the board of retired teachers where she served as vice-president. Nancy received her under-graduate degree in Speech Therapy and Communication Disorders from the University of Redlands, and her Master's Degree in Special Education from Cal State University.
