Letter - Celebrate Community Organizers
Misc     shogun     Friday 05 September 2008 - 15:54:16

Celebrate Community Organizers

Palin’s slurring reference about community organizers tags her as an elitist political hack, completely unaware of the vital roles they have played in the progress of our nation. In fact, without them, she would not have a shot at being vice-president. She wouldn't even be  able to vote. My grandmother, Carrie Paton, was one of hundreds of community organizers across the U.S. who struggled and suffered to achieve women’s suffrage in America - a victory celebrated again just last month.

I’ve been one myself, helping to build hospitals, a Christian high school, and a neighborhood park. Community organizers have responded to emergencies from recent hurricanes to events all the way back to Lexington and Concord. Surely this governor must be aware of some community heroines such as Jane Addams who founded Hull House in Chicago, and she must know that Ben Franklin was a community organizer. He organized the first volunteer fire department, in America, and our first circulating library. And, of course, her political party, and mine, could not exist without community organizers.

Palin’s snide second jab at Barack Obama was a nasty thrust at community organizers across the country because they do have responsibilities. They care about the causes they support, and they must be trustworthy, characteristics which “Barracuda”  Palin seems to lack.
