THIS MONTH AT THE RFK . . .

Assembly Member Tony Mendoza (D-56)

The Honorable Tony Mendoza (D-Norwalk) will visit the RFK Democratic Club at our regular meeting on Monday, October 17.

Mr. Mendoza will review his six years as a member of the State Assembly and give his outlook for the state government under the new redistricting law.
Also, Mr Mendoza will talk about his future plans, since he is about to be termed out under California’s highly restrictive term limits law.

One piece of legislation recently signed by the governor into law was a bill authored by Mendoza to restrict employers from using credit checks in their hiring process.  Many prospective employees, having been without work for many months in this economy, have been adversely affected by bad credit reports.  Employers were using this information against new hires.

Mr. Mendoza will also review the recent dispute over the redistricting of LA County’s supervisor districts.

RFK Monthly Meeting - September 19, 2011
Misc     shogun     Monday 19 September 2011 - 17:15:11

THIS MONTH AT THE RFK . . .

ALEC - The American Legislative Exchange Council

One of the most dangerous organizations you’ve never heard about ...

ALEC is the acronym for the American Legislative Exchange Council – a secretive front group of hundreds of corporations that are investing millions of dollars a year to write business-friendly legislation at the expense of the middle class.

ALEC has drafted more than 800 model bills for state legislators, including efforts to privatize everything from schools to prisons, to weaken workers' rights, and to make it more difficult for citizens to vote. They even wrote a resolution in support of the horrendous Citizens United decision, which opened the floodgates for corporate money in our elections.

Worse, they are lobbying in state capitals across the country, all while claiming to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that they are a charitable organization. That means that their corporate backers can take a tax deduction by giving money to ALEC to – guess what? – push for more tax breaks and less regulation for their companies!

At the RFK this month, we’ll take a look at ALEC, their activities, who they are, and some of the damage they’ve done to our way of life.

ALEC is not about good government, or improving our democracy.  It is a self-serving group that is only interested in dismantling America’s social safety net, getting rid of as many regulations as possible, and completely eliminating such important agencies as the Environmental Protection Agency.

The list of companies working within the ALEC umbrella is truly troublesome.  Some of the country’s most well known corporations have been funneling huge sums of money to federal and state lawmakers, supplying them with pre-written legislation, and then attaching lobbyists to that lawmaker to ensure that he or she follows through with having the bill enacted, either in congress or in a state legislature.

Here are just a few of the corporations in ALEC:  Altria Group, American Bail Coalition, AT&T, Bayer Corp., Coca-Cola, ExxonMobil, GlaxoSmithKline, Intuit, Inc., Johnson & Johnson, Koch Companies, Kraft Food, Inc., Pfizer Inc., Reynolds American, State Farm Insurance Co., United Parcel Service, and Wal-Mart.

ALEC Award-Winners include: Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush, Gov Bobby Jindal, Gov. Rick Perry.  Others politicians include: John Boener, Dennis Hastert, Tom Delay, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, plus over 2,000 state legislators

Fortunately, there are now many groups in place working to expose the underworld workings of ALEC, and these groups are dedicated to ensuring that government is not overrun by the “corporatocracy”.  In state by state, bill by bill, ALEC legislation is being challenged, and defeated or reversed.

This is a battle for the heart of America.

UNITED!
Misc     shogun     Monday 19 September 2011 - 12:18:16

UNITED!

by Carol Meglio

What has happened to the United States of America? The Problem seems to be in our inattention to the word United. We seem to have forgotten what it means to our philosophy of life as a country. What I hear now is the word individualist; how we are a country of rugged individualists. I hear how each person is able to make his or her own way- what a lie! No one goes it alone in Life. We all need other people for physical and emotional support. No state can go it alone either; we must be here for each other. In the past being United is what has given us our strength as a people. United means we have a plan, a plan to get somewhere together. Where we were going We could never have gotten to alone. But now this big lie of individualism has arisen and people are buying into it.

  • "Why must I pay for others to school their children"
  • "Why must I pay into social security"
  • "Why must I help others with their health care? They should take care of themselves. I can care for myself, what is the matter with them?"

But all of this is just a fool whistling past the graveyard. We don't know what time will bring us in this life or what misadventures or illnesses may befall us. When we work together in a United way we can help those who have not been able to "keep up" in life.

When we act as individuals we go in all different directions each doing his or her own thing, and when disaster strikes we have no plan in place to rescue people. Examples of this abound - going back to the closing of the mental institutions in our state under Governor Reagan. Each community was to take care on their own mentally ill, but no plan was put into place as to how this was to be done. The local communities looked the other way, unable or unwilling to accept responsibility for those who could not care for themselves. Finally the whole thing was dumped on the families of these very ill people and to this day we have families desperately struggling with this problem with little help. We have places in our cities where these poor unfortunates are dumped like human refuse to wander and live in confusion. If there was a problem with the mental hospitals why didn't we Unite to make them better places of help for our troubled fellow citizens? The big lie of individualism!

Now we have the state of Texas where we have more talk of the rugged individualist. They cut their fire fighters funding so low that there was a horrible lack of equipment. No one wanted to pay for the protection of the other communities.

"We are rugged individualist who can take care of ourselves"

"Why we may even want to secede from the Union"

" Why should we pay taxes, let everyone take care of their own problems"

But they didn't have a plan for how that should happen. We see now how well that has worked. With no regulations, no plans, or no instructions from fire services the individuals let the brush and pine needles stack up around their homes and the ill equipped fire fighters had no means to help the fire ravaged areas. What happened to the word "United"? Let us put it back into who we are. United we have a plan. United we move forward with a purpose for all of us here in this country. United we leave no one behind to suffer or be in misery.

We are the Unites States of America!

Let’s act like it!

RFK Monthly Meeting - August 15, 2011

This Month at the RFK . . .

The California Disclose Act, Plus -
Discussion on Other Upcoming Ballot Initiatives

Ballot Initiatives
The next time Californians vote will be in the June 2012 Primary election.  But it’s not too early to review some the Initiatives that are working their way through the system.

The California Disclose Act
A representative from the California Clean Money Campaign will come and discuss this critical bill.  In January 2010, the Supreme Court decided that groups such as corporations could spend limitless amounts of money on political campaigns.  Now, California is trying to pass an initiative that would force these donors to identify themselves and “disclose” who they are.

Also, there is another attack on labor union political donations, a new Term Limits modification, an initiative to block internet taxes, and yet another Parental Notification initiative.
